THIRTY-FOUR

It was late—or rather, it was early. Around one in the morning. The room was dark. Patterson was in bed. She and Grant had talked for more than two hours in the end, veering away from her sister’s case to happier times. Like their first months together and the long road to a relationship that began when she was a rookie agent shadowing him in the same way Special Agent Bauer was now shadowing Patterson. After hanging up, she had sent a quick text message to her father, which she did often to make sure he was doing okay on his own back in New York, then watched TV for an hour before retiring for the night.

Now, an hour later, she snapped awake, her senses on high alert. Something had roused her from slumber, but she didn’t know what.

The air conditioner hummed and clunked under the window, struggling with the humid night air. A door slammed, the sound distant and faint. From still further away, came the rumble of vehicles on the interstate.

Nothing out of the ordinary for a seedy motel on the edge of the city.

She sat up, her eyes sweeping the dark room.

The breath caught in her throat when she saw a bulky figure sitting in the chair next to the TV unit. But then she realized it was nothing more than her clothes discarded the night before. In its desire to find meaning out of randomness, her tired brain had interpreted them as a person.

Her gaze drifted toward the door.

Still locked—the privacy flip latch engaged.

Then her attention moved to the window, and she realized what had roused her.

There, standing on the other side of the window, visible in the gap where the drawn curtains didn’t quite come together, was the partial silhouette of a person. And this time it was not her sleepy mind conjuring phantoms out of nothing.

A shiver coursed through her, and she shrank back, overcome by the distinct sensation that the figure was looking into the room. Looking at her.

For a long moment Patterson did nothing.

She didn’t want to alert the person on the other side of the window that she had spotted them.

Her gun was within easy reach on the nightstand next to her.

Without turning on the bedroom light she swung her legs off the bed and slid the Glock close. She stood and scooped the gun up in a quick fluid movement, shielding it with her body as she padded to the bathroom. As far as the figure on the other side of the curtains was concerned, she had just woken up with a need to pee. Or so she hoped.

Stepping into the bathroom, she gathered herself together and thought about her next move. She felt vulnerable dressed only in a loose tee and pajama shorts, but she couldn’t get dressed without tipping off her watcher and she didn’t want to do that until it was absolutely necessary.

Patterson lingered in the bathroom doorway, took a deep breath, then stepped back out. But
